Blast from the Past: Matt cartoon strips 1979/85
Back in November 1984, I was pleased to produce the regular comic strip, Matt and the Cat which appeared in Transformers comic (Marvel UK), this leading on to a new 23 page Humph the Cat comic strip. See link below. However, every strip has its beginning and the characters, Matt and Humph equally had their starting point. For that we've got to go back to me walking into the feature editors office at the Bradford Telegraph and Argus in March 1979. The original plan was to sell to editors, Mike Priestly and John Hewitt a cartoon strip entitled, Wishy, Washy and Wig. Whilst John didn't go for this, he did notice a small inked cartoon of my eldest son, who at the time was just two and a half years old. Somewhat taken with this, he told me that if I was able to adapt the character into a daily strip, he'd accept it. This I did rather quickly, resulting in the first Matt strip appearing in the newspaper 18 April, 1979. Just for the record, the Wishy, Washy and Wig strips did go on to appear in comic book format in the young readers title, Plus Comic, with editor and children's writer, Andrew Wooding.
Seeking to follow the style of such great strips as Peanuts, the Matt strip appeared as a daily for six years with the Bradford Telegraph and Argus, and later with The Manchester Evening News. Whilst both older sons had had influence on the strip, the cat with it's silly big feet 'n' cheeks left his paw mark. Do-Do Man cover artwork for mobile phone strips
Whilst Do-Do Man was created by myself and partner, Sarah Sier, back in 1993, and introduced into comic books, the character was directed for a time towards international comic strips for mobile phones.
Following the intro artwork will be four sample pics of the b/w artwork. A Do-Do Man graphic novel is presently being put together, consisting of the original limited edition, issues 1 to 4, plus all the artwork for as yet an unseen new story. In addition to this, feature pages will be included.

The Hooded Sock pp1
The following two inked pages are part of a project mainly aimed at a younger readership. The Hooded Sock covers the warm but funny story of a young lad named, Jake, who finds a new friendship with a sock believing itself to be an adventurer and hero.

Mynio and Melnykowycz cover b/w artwork
Mynio and Melnykowycz ( a work in progress ).
This is the tale of comic book artists, Luka Mynio and Steve Melnykowycz. Whilst well established owning and working on the children's character, Tibbles the Pink Fluffy Bunny, not forgetting his best friend, Daisy Duck, Luka is finding that their adventures over the past year in Happy Wood is slowly beginning to drive him insane. In the hope of re-gaining his creative spark, whilst working under a pseudonym, the guys produce a more 'adult' comic book series, but it's when this becomes highly popular with the readers that the worlds of the two titles create chaos for the artists. Please find following this two pages from the book as tasters.
And just for the record...while Melnykowycz is an old name linked with my family, Luka Mynio was my grandfather.
